Guewenheim is certainly the oldest village in the canton. Its name was first mentioned in 823 in a charter of Louis le Pieux, son and successor of Charlemagne, who entrusted the villages of the Doller Valley to the abbey of Masevaux. It would seem, however, that the document is a forgery made in the 12th century. The village was particularly affected by the Thirty Years' War. Many will flee. One hundred and fifty years later, there are only 25 families living in the commune. The village will be attached to the canton of Thann during the Revolution. The introduction of the textile industry in the 19th century transformed the site.
