In the Middle Ages, Kabelvåg was the most populated village in Northern Norway thanks to the Lofoten fishery. Today it is a charming village, famous for having seen the very first Lofoten church, built in 1103 by King Øystein. The church that can be seen today at the entrance to the village, known as Lofotkatedralen (Lofoten Cathedral) when arriving from the north, was built in the 1890s to accommodate the growing population. The village also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the Lofoten Islands, the Lofotmuseet, and an aquarium dedicated mainly to cod, the Lofotakvariet.
