The Gallo-Roman town of Alesia was located on a hilltop oppidum between Montbard and Dijon. One of the major events in French history took place here, in 52 BC. It was the famous battle between Julius Caesar and Vercingetorix. After two months of siege, Vercingetorix surrendered, and soon Gaul, which was almost unified, was conquered. While historians have debated the location of the site, there is little doubt that Alise-Sainte-Reine is indeed Alesia. At the foot of the famous hill where the statue of Vercingetorix is enthroned, don't miss the MuseoParc d'Alésia.
