Longford is a lively city that is slowly recovering from the crisis. Still not very touristy, it is articulated around a main street that goes down to the river Camlin. Its name comes from the Gaelic words long (boat) and phoirt (port). The courthouse, in Renaissance style, built in 1792, is the oldest building in the city. Like a miracle, St. Mel's Cathedral, with its recognizable silhouette visible from afar, is standing after a spectacular fire on Christmas Day 2009. The county capital can be a strategic central base for exploring the country (Sligo is 1 hour away by car, Galway 1h30...).
