Granard is a thriving, community-minded and prosperous town about 25 kilometers from Longford. It's a town in Leinster well worth a visit, not least for its motte-and-bailey, the site of a castle built in 1199 by Richard Tuite. The site overlooks St. Mary's Church, one of the main points of interest in this pleasant Irish town. And if you want to do some shopping before setting off on your excursion or hike, there's a good little food market on Friday mornings. An 18th-century harp festival is held here every year in early September.
