The small town of Ballymahon, near the Westmeath county border, is of relatively little architectural interest. Ballymahon is best known as the gateway to the Lakelands, and is renowned for its boating, the Royal Canal, its woodlands and The Bog Lane Theatre. Ballymahon takes its name from the Gaelic Baile Mathúna (Town of Mahon). Mahon was in fact a Western chieftain who fought a famous battle at Shrule (in Gaelic, Sruaith Fhuil, River of Blood). He defeated O'Rourke of Leitrim and took possession of the lands in the region.
