Wadi el-Assuti, classified as a protected area since 1989, is located south of Qena and 400 kilometres from Cairo. Covering an area of 1,000 km2, it stretches westwards to join the Nile valley in the form of a delta whose base is parallel to the Nile. Its main feature is the protection of desert species, especially reptiles, and many invertebrates. Although small in size, these species play an important role in the environmental balance and soil fertility. The reserve also includes many wild plants, medicinal herbs and a few scattered trees of acacia and doum palms.
