The ancient necropolis of Hermopolis lies some 20 km southwest of Beni Hassan. Capital of the 15th nome of Upper Egypt, the city was first known by the Egyptian name of Khnum. The moon-god Thoth, represented as a baboon or ibis, was worshipped here. After a period of decline, the city, under the name of Hermopolis, enjoyed a second period of splendor, in the time of the Ptolemies. After leaving the main road, you'll cross fertile countryside criss-crossed by numerous irrigation canals, offering the daily spectacle of life in the fields. 5 km from the site, a beautiful Muslim cemetery stands out with its qubba.
