For those who think that the Netherlands is only a historical country, a visit to Almere is suggested. This city is indeed completely new and its birth is recent. It is therefore not surprising that Almere is not a picturesque city at all. Connected to Amsterdam by the A6, it is as new as the poplars and birches along the road. Created like Lelystad further north (and provincial capital) after the Ijsselmeer was drained some 40 years ago, the city now has a population of over 215,000 and is at the forefront of architecture and sustainability.
