Nijmegen can claim to be the oldest city in the Netherlands. Founded by the Romans in 70 AD, Noviomagus, later Nijmegen, began its long history. Charlemagne left his mark by building a royal palace on the heights, of which the St. Nicholas chapel in the Valkhof park still remains. But the city also passed into the hands of Maurice d'Orange who drove out the Spaniards in 1591 and later the French occupied this strategic city. At the end of the 19th century, Nijmegen became industrialized and enjoyed a period of economic prosperity. Unfortunately, the bombs of the Second World War destroyed a large part of the city center. Today, Nijmegen has 172,000 inhabitants, including 19,000 students. It is a busy city where it is good to shop and enjoy the many cosy cafés in the center.
