The town stretches along a protected natural gulf, and is made up of several hamlets set in panoramic positions on the surrounding hills. In the second half of the 19th century, the development of the ceramics industry made Laveno a prosperous town. In Cerro, a small neighboring village, a museum traces the history of this craft tradition, which continues to this day in a handful of potters' workshops. Laveno's attractions include the Austrian fort, which can be reached by crossing the Parco delle Torrazze. Another fine building is the Villa Angeli Frua, now the seat of the town hall.
