On its rocky promontory, the small town of Castro has preserved a medieval plan that gives it a discreet charm. Founded by the Cretans or by the Greeks, Castro was the episcopal seat from 1179 to 1537. You can see in the city some fortifications of the 16th century and walk along a portion of the walls. Castro is also the starting point for a visit to the coast by boat and to the sea caves (the Zinzulusa and the Romanelli). The historical center is located in the upper town (Castro Superiore) and is concentrated around Piazza della Vittoria. The new town (Castro Marina), devoid of charm, is located below, a few steps from the sea.
