Aigüestortes Park is the only national park in Catalonia, created in 1955. Situated between the Vall d 'Aran in the west and the principality of Andorra in the east, it occupies some 40,000 ha and has a protection zone of 14,000 ha. The park offers some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Pyrenees, with many lakes (15% of the area), torrents, stunts and a varied flora (pine, birch, fir). The park is also an exceptional wildlife reserve with its chamois, heather roofs, beaver, royal eagles, otters, marmots, white partrits and many other species.Vehicle traffic is prohibited in the park except for Boí taxis (access by the west) and Espot (east access). The Estany Negre (black pond) and the 150 glacial lakes of the park, the peaks of Agulles d 'Amitges, and the emblematic Estany de Sant Maurici can be found in several hiking and walking routes. The park has numerous waterfalls that, during the winter, become ice sculptures. Reservations are required for several days, because camping is prohibited in the park.
