Pont de Suert, with 2,200 inhabitants, is the main town in the Alta Ribagorça. It is built near the Noguera Ribagorçana, at the convergence of several valleys. Founded in the High Middle Ages, its historic centre has preserved much of its character. Worth seeing: the Plaza del Mercadal and its arcades, as well as the Plaza Mayor, where the Town Hall (18th century) is located. The old church of the Assumption houses the collection of sacred art of the Alta Ribagorça. Finally, to the south of the town, the ruins of the Lavaix monastery (9th century) have been partially covered by the waters of the Escales reservoir since 1950, with the level varying according to the flow of the dam.
