Fitero (municipality of 2,000 inhabitants) is located in the heart of the market-gardening plain of the Alhama Valley and marks the boundary of La Rioja. It is best known for its Monastery of Santa María, the first Cistercian convent on the Iberian Peninsula. Apart from the monastery itself, there are few noble remains: the monks prohibited the construction of large buildings and the use of coats of arms on the façades. Fitero is also a good starting point for walks, including one to the cave where, according to legend, the grieving soul of a Moorish princess appears every evening as she seeks water for her wounded Christian lover.
