A pleasant, very green city, located 15 km north of Ciudad del Este. It is named after Hernando Arias de Saavedra (1561-1634), the first Creole governor of the province of Río de la Plata and Paraguay. Hernandarias is nicknamed the "Latin American Electrical Energy Capital". Its territory is home to two huge hydroelectric power stations: Acaray, and above all Itaipú, which for a long time was the largest power station in the world. Itaipú Binacional, the Paraguayan-Brazilian entity in charge of the operation of the plant, manages the visits to the dam, the Tierra Guarani Museum and the Tatí Yupí Biological Refuge. A functional visitor centre will direct you to visit these different sites free of charge.
