Yguazú is a peaceful little town located 40 km from Ciudad del Este, on the Ruta 2 that leads to Asunción. It should not be confused with the famous Iguazú Falls, located on the other side of the border, about 60 km away. What was in 1961 only a colony of a few families, who came to work the land, has turned into a real district, whose peculiarity is that it is mainly populated by descendants of Japanese settlers. As in the former Japanese colonies of La Colmena, La Paz or Pirapó, among others, one enters a Paraguayan city steeped in Japanese culture. Agriculture (soya, wheat, macadamia nuts, horticulture...) then attracted other populations: Paraguayans, but also Swiss, French, Germans, Italians and Brazilians. Today, Yguazu is a multicultural city, which offers an interesting break on the road. But if you are told that apart from sushi, you can find the best Swiss and French cheeses from Paraguay, made by a Swiss family, in a traditional way, then a real break is called for! In town, there are posadas and hotels run by Japanese families, restaurants serving Paraguayan-Japanese or Brazilian cuisine, and a supermarket run by the Cooperativa Yguazú. A little outside towards Asunción, the Pikypo Center, provides tourist information (hotels, restaurants, activities...) and has a cultural complex dedicated to the Guarani culture and the history of the colony. Finally, the vast Yguazú Lake is only a few kilometers away, with quality bathing facilities where you can stay overnight.
