Foz do Iguaçu ("mouth of the great waters" in Guarani) is an ordinary big city, built on a red earth. It is even quite ugly. Its population has exploded since the creation of the Itaipu dam in 1975. The city has grown from 28,000 inhabitants in 1960 to over 300,000 today. Fortunately, the lush nature makes for a pleasant stay and the city is lively at night. Nevertheless, and as in any Brazilian city, it is advisable to take some precautions at night. The proximity of the three borders generates intense traffic and some areas should be avoided. Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina, is much quieter.
