Located some 50 km east of Bishkek, the small town of Tokmok, with a population of around 55,000, is little more than a quick stopover on the Burana road, where the Burana tower is located, or on the Rot Front road. Not much of a tourist attraction, Tokmok nevertheless had a bit of a buzz at the beginning of the 21st century, when the Americans occupied a base there to support operations in Afghanistan. This presence was resented by neighbouring Russia, and President Bakiyev quickly put an end to it, plunging Tokmok back into the peaceful gloom of a provincial village where people just pass through.
