Bishkek is a pleasant little town, green and lively, but hardly a capital. The city center can be crossed in less than 45 minutes, and two days are more than enough to do the rounds. It's enough time to let yourself be seduced by the good-natured, relaxed atmosphere in the gardens and parks around the presidential palace, on Ala-Too Square or along the tree-lined alleys where Marx and Engels still seem to be prolonging their debates. Bishkek is a blend of East and ex-USSR. The Soviet era largely dominates the architecture, but Oriental nonchalance and the liveliness of the bazaars have returned.
