The Ala Archa Gorge is a popular destination both for Sunday walkers who come to picnic with vodka and for experienced trekkers. At the entrance of the national park, a small museum will make you discover all the animals which populate the area, the stuffed Marco Polo sheep and a good hundred birds flying suspended for eternity. A stony path, which lazy people can follow in 4x4, leads to some yurts for tourists. In the summer, hikers can sleep there rough (bringing their own sleeping bag), but free of charge. There is an old sports centre at 2,100 m above sea level. It is the starting point for treks towards the Ak-Saï glacier. The fir trees planted like candles on the steep slopes and jagged peaks leave the contemplative very satisfied, others can climb to the four cardinal corners. At 3,100 m, the "Raztek stop" is the usual base camp from which about thirty routes of different technical levels start, towards the summits of the Ak-Saï ranges, where the Korona peak, at 4,860 m, and the Semionov peak, at 4,875 m, culminate (count two days for an ascent). One can also make day treks at the foot of the Ak-Saï glacier, with a picnic at the edge of a waterfall, or in the Adygene gorges. The best season for expeditions, especially the more sportive ones, is from May to September. It is also possible to go horseback riding in this region. In winter, skiing follows hiking, and horse-riders can enjoy themselves at the resorts of Kashka Suu (www.kashka-suu.kg) or Zil Suulu-Tor (all Bishkek agencies easily organize transport and accommodation). The ski areas are not very extensive, but are still very suitable for a day trip. Equipment hire is possible on site.
