At the western tip of Lake Issyk Kul, Balakchy is little more than a truck stop where you can stock up on water and kuruts, or spend some time waiting for a bus change to or from Naryn. While from a geographical point of view the town may seem well situated for exploring the shores of the lake, you'll soon realize that it offers no tourist attractions or facilities worth a prolonged stop. Balak means "fish", and the town takes its name from its main activity: fishing, which is still practiced today despite the closure of factories after independence.
