For those looking for more authenticity than Cholpon-Ata has to offer, but who don't want to miss out on a dip in the world's second-largest Alpine lake, Tamchy is a pleasant and accessible stopover where a few beautiful beaches and an equally festive but much more popular atmosphere await you. A bus stop, a mosque, a tiny bazaar and streets lined with fish vendors and small tchaikhanas leading to the beach: Tamchy is an ideal holiday destination, set against the backdrop of the high, snow-capped Pamir peaks on the other side of the lake. The water temperature only rises above 20°C in July and August.
