Burlington is Vermont's most populous city. Its streets and buildings bear witness to the city's industrial and upscale past. But the city's roots in the land, so dear to Vermonters, and its proximity to Lake Champlain, where residents love to stroll and relax, are not forgotten. The population is young and diverse. Every year, some 10,000 students attend the University of Vermont, one of the oldest in New England. Church Street, designed for pedestrians, remains the town's nerve center, with its many stores, bars and restaurants.
