The capital of New Mexico is located on the banks of the Santa Fe River, at an altitude of 2,135 m, in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost range of the Rocky Mountains, straddling Colorado and New Mexico. With a population of 88,000, nearly half of which is Hispanic, it is the fourth largest city in the state. You won't find any buildings in this city where the adobe architecture (dried earth bricks) gives a pleasant impression of coherence. Santa Fe is indeed protected by a 1957 municipal decision stipulating that all new and refurbished buildings must be built in the Spanish pueblo style. The city is articulated around its central square (Santa Fe Plaza) from which all the streets radiate. This is where the Old Santa Fe Trail, which is the original route of Route 66, ends.Every year, during an August weekend, the Santa Fe Indian Market is held and has been since 1924. This major event brings together nearly 1,200 artists from 100 tribes.
