The name Moriarty comes from the first family to settle here in 1887, that of Michael Timothy Moriarty. Today, along Route 66 (427 Mary St), you can see the freshly renovated remains of the Whiting Brothers gas station. This station, which is probably the last one, was part of a chain created in 1926, which declined from the 1970s to disappear in the mid-1980s. A hundred or so identical stations were located along Route 66 between Shamrock (Texas) and Barstow (California), recognizable by their yellow signs with the letters W and B superimposed. Moriarty also has a historical museum.
