The Rio Puerco is a tributary of the Rio Grande, which is dry most of the year, but which has in the past been subject to violent floods. This was notably the case in 1929 and 1941, with flows reaching 990 m3/s against the usual 1.12 m3/S. It crosses Route 66 (1930-1940 alignment) and Interstate I-40, 18 miles east of downtown Albuquerque. The Route 66 Casino Hotel complex and the Rio Puerco Bridge, which has spanned it since 1933, are in the immediate vicinity. This bridge is no longer used by road traffic but can be crossed on foot. It is one of the must-see photo stops on The Mother Road.
