Bernalillo is the last stop before the northern suburbs of Albuquerque, whose downtown is 17 miles away. For those willing to temporarily leave Route 66 and take a big detour, it's possible to go to Sandia Crest, the peak overlooking Albuquerque (10,000 feet above sea level), and then reach the city via Sandia Park and Tijeras (the southern end of the Turquoise Trail, on Route 66 from Santa Rosa). By this loop and taking into account the visit of the summit, it is necessary to count 57 miles between Barnalillo and Albuquerque, and a minimum of two hours of road. This represents a nice detour, in every sense of the word
