Located in the center of the Grand Duchy, at the confluence of the three rivers Alzette, Sûre and Wark, Ettelbruck is also known as the gateway to the Ardennes. It marks the natural border between Gutland and Oesling. Along with Diekirch, Ettelbruck is one of the major towns in the Nordstad, an economic, social and cultural grouping of six municipalities: Bettendorf, Colmar-Berg, Diekirch, Erpeldange, Ettelbruck and Schieren. As the town has been ravaged by fire several times in its history (1532, 1778 and 1814), it has no notable old buildings. However, the well-developed pedestrian zone in the town center is a good place to stroll and enjoy a meal or coffee. The many merchants who have set up shop here frequently organize Sunday openings, and a fresh market is held here every Friday.
