Seronga, the highlight of a visit to the Panhandle, is a surprise when you get there. With a population of about 4,000, this large village with sandy avenues is equipped with an airstrip, a clinic, a police station and a high school. The community is organized as a trust. The Okavango Polers Trust has decided to put tourism at the heart of its development. The members hope to work as polers or as employees of the various camps that are being developed. The village, without being touristy, is adapted to the arrival of travelers. Thus, signs indicate here the school, there the dispensary, inviting the visitor to be interested in the life of the village. We recommend a particularly picturesque point of this small community: the river ambulance boat that can be found at the pier! Seronga can be reached by one of three ways. The river, the most recommended, Her Majesty the Okavango River itself, starting from Sepopa, offers a beautiful ride to this town. It is also possible to reach the village by plane from Maun or by road, in a 4 x 4, from Mohembo, by the eastern bank. A few accommodation facilities are available in Seronga today: the Okavango Houseboat offers an experience almost unique in Botswana and Umvuvu Camp, a pleasant comfort. For the traveler who wants to enjoy Seronga, we recommend spending at least three nights there, to take part in the various activities or simply to let yourself be won over by the serenity of the river.
