Just across the border from Botswana, 12 km south of Popa Falls, the small Mahango Game Reserve, just 30,000 ha in size, protects a small river corner for wildlife from neighboring regions. Mahango Core Area, located west of the Okavango River, is now part of Bwabwata National Park. At the water's edge, vast savannah plains alternate with areas of dense forest. Far from everything, this reserve, which sometimes reminds of the Chobe Park in Botswana, has the advantage of being little visited. It is one of the wildest and best preserved reserves in Namibia. Famous for its large herds of elephants that move in numbers on both sides of the Okavango during the dry season, it also hosts a rare diversity of wildlife: giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, kudus and impalas, but also black hippotragues, horse antelopes, harnessed guibs, as well as very rare antelopes, present in the Moremi Reserve, in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and adapted to an aquatic environment: sitatunga, Lechwe's cob, reed cob. There are also more than 400 species of birds! An excellent way to observe all this beautiful world: at less than one kilometer from the entrance of the park, the track branches off to the left. Following this track, you will go along the Okavango River on the banks of which stand some beautiful specimens of baobabs. The river plains attract elephants, antelopes and giraffes, and if you are very lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of lions on the trail of a prey.. To know. Before the reserve became part of the Bwabwata National Park, this was one of the few wildlife areas in Namibia where you could walk unaccompanied... at your own risk though, as predators are present here. Today, you are only allowed to get out of your vehicle at two dedicated picnic areas along the river: Giant Baobab and Kweche, which are also excellent observation points.
