Chief's Island has a special regime within the Moremi Game Reserve. This island is only accessible to guests of the few lodges that share its tourism operation. It is the heart of the sanctuary and the most spectacular area of the delta. But travelers who can't get through the doors of this sanctuary can rest assured that the Okavango is such a wilderness paradise that visiting the other sections of Moremi will be just as rewarding. It is said that Chief's is the predator capital of Africa and that you can't go on a game drive without seeing a pride of lions, a leopard or a cheetah. Our investigations do not contradict this reputation. Another important element that contributes to make it the most popular area is the reintroduction of black and white rhinos in 2001. It is the only place in Botswana where you can see the big five in the wild. The environment here has been protected for a long time, which gives it both balance and richness, conducive to the serenity (vigilant!) of wildlife. In the north, the island is a wide grassy plain, just covered by the floods, dotted with very small islands, refuges of date palms. Large trees - sausage tree, fig tree, African ebony tree - mark the edge of the water bodies. This is a classic delta landscape but it is very photogenic here. Further south, the land is no longer flooded and is the domain of mopane or acacia and a few scattered baobabs.
