Between Digby and Yarmouth lies the Acadian region of St. Mary's Bay, formerly known as French Bay, protected by a long barrier beach. Its inhabitants are the descendants of former settlers who came from France in the 17th century. After the Great Upheaval, some of the Acadians, who had fled to the northeastern United States, wanted to return home. Their fertile lands in the Annapolis Valley having been occupied by the New England Planters since 1760, the Acadians settled on the less fertile coast of St. Mary's Bay in 1767, where they had to convert to fishing.
