Founded in 1653 by Philippe Mius d'Entremont, Pubnico is the oldest Acadian community in the province. It lives mainly from fishing, especially in West Pubnico where several fish processing companies are located. To discover Acadian Nova Scotia, a visit to the Village historique acadien is a must. As for the name of the community, it comes from the Mi'kmaq word Pogomkook which means "a place where you can go to fish for eels in the winter by cutting holes in the ice". The French called it "Pobombcoup", eventually shortened to "Pombcoup", before the English named the place "Pubnico".
