It is said that in 1859 a gold prospector, who had lost his way in a canoe on Harrison Lake, fell into the water. Far from perishing in the icy waters, he found the water warm and pleasant. In 1886, a hotel was built on the shores of the lake. These hot springs emerge from the southern shores of the lake; their temperature varies from 155°C (sulfur) to 160°C (potash). The waters of the lake are cool enough, despite the legend, to be used for water sports. In September, the World Championship of Sand Sculpture is unique: in the absence of tide, the sculptures remain standing for a month after the jury has selected them.
