In the heart of Northern Ireland, this immense lake is the largest of the British Isles and the third largest in Europe. Dating from the tertiary era, it is 300 km² and affects five of the country's six counties. A legend says that the horse god Eochu haunts his depths and that fishermen sometimes hear him neigh... Once in the region, you should not miss to visit the banks, which are particularly bucolic and picturesque. You don't see many people there, except a few hamlets, farms, a pub here and there, a marina or a vestige of the past...It is also an exceptional natural reserve for birds. More than 100,000 people come to feed there every year in winter, flying from Canada, Greenland, the Russian Arctic and Iceland, where magnificent wild swans originate. The lake is also exploited for its fish and some 650 tonnes are exported each year. For centuries, its waters were a means of transporting flax, wood, coal and livestock from one county to another. They even served as an airstrip for seaplanes during the Second World War.
