At 42 km from Cuenca. North of Chordeleg, Paute (from the quichua Pau, exclamation of the Inca Tupac Yupanqui when he discovers a local beauty!) stretches in a valley characterized by its fruits, its flowers and especially its sugar cane fields which give place to an important annual festival. It was in the waters of the river that the great poet Rafael Romero y Cordero drowned. On the road to Paute, you can stop in several villages to enjoy a good roasted chicken... or a cuy! Going up north from Paute, you will find other typical villages, such as Palmas or Sevilla de Oro, which have kept their charm of yesteryear.
