Capital of the department of the same name, Retalhuleu - "Reu" for those who know it well, pronounced "re-ou" - is the largest city on the Pacific coast. It would be tempting to include it in the Highlands region, since it is located at the foot of the mountains, 55 km from Quetzaltenango. However, it only reaches an altitude of 240 meters and its heat can become stifling, just like the rest of the coast. It is a rather middle-class agricultural town, relatively pleasant and clean, where one can meet both businessmen and women from the agro-industry and crowds of workers from the huge banana plantations around. On the other hand, it is of very limited interest to the visitor.
