A dusty, noisy and unattractive mushroom town, Santa Elena is nonetheless an obligatory and practical stopover for travelers who want to discover the archaeological sites of the northern Petén. The reason for this is its large Terminal Nueva, from which buses leave for the surrounding area and for all of Guatemala, as well as its airport, located only a few kilometers east of the city.Nevertheless, staying there is not interesting, given its proximity - 2 kilometers - to Flores: prefer to stay on this small island, surrounded by the waters of the Petén Itzá lake. Connected to Santa Elena by a bridge, it will make a good base camp to visit the surrounding sites. For more tranquility - and authenticity - continue 30 kilometers east to the peaceful village of El Remate, nestled at the other end of the lake.
