The former Marenco Biological Station, northwest of Corcovado, has become a reserve to protect the edges of the national park. By acting as a buffer, it also helps to integrate the local population into the conservation effort by giving them the opportunity to work on forest maintenance and to welcome visitors, researchers, students and tourists. Created in 1991, the refuge protects more than 150 species of mammals - including pumas and tapirs - 60 species of amphibians, 80 species of reptiles and 350 species of birds within its 300 hectares of tropical rainforest.
