In Coronado Bay, south of Dominical, this recent park (1989) protects 170 ha on land and 5,000 ha at sea. Offshore, the porous coral reef represents an important habitat and reproduction area for marine fauna. It is also one of the southernmost sites for the reproduction of the humpback whale, which can be seen almost all year round. Another curiosity is that the park is home to six species of mangrove, one of which is very rare. There are several entrances to the 12 km of beaches: one in Uvita/Bahia, two in Playa Colonia, one in Playa Ballena and one in Playa Piñuela. Be careful though, these last two were closed during our last visit. Two other accesses to the sea are possible and free, by Hermosa and Ventanas but they are not part of the park. The main entrance, the first one coming from Dominical, is the one of Uvita/Bahia with a family beach very frequented by the Ticos (with coolers and barbecues). It is here that you will see the famous tombolo, or "whale tail" accessible only at low tide. Colonia is a good place for surfing. Be aware that Playa Ballena is rocky, while Piñuela is known as the prettiest. The paths are not marked, but it is impossible to get lost. Ask the park rangers for an aerial photo of the park and you'll understand the origin of its name. Inside the park, take advantage of the low tide to cross the river and reach the tombolo. Near the entrance, boats and diving masks can be rented
