Pskov, with its 205,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest and most historically important Russian cities. It lies on the banks of the Velikaya River near its mouth in Lake Chudsk. Easily accessible from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Pskov can be visited on a two- or three-day excursion. Its historical (Kremlin) and religious (Miroja Monastery) heritage is combined with a beautifully renovated medieval centre and a beautifully landscaped riverbank where it is pleasant to stroll or cycle. Very quiet, the old Hanseatic merchant city is a breath of fresh air: green, on a human scale and ideally located between the two capitals, it has the charm of the old cultural centres of European Russia.
