Wick is a formerly dynamic fishing port which had its glory days and a flourishing trade thanks to the exploitation of herring. Today, after the decline of its activity, the town is looking for a future in tourism, and has found it, since it is a crossing point of the NC500 and offers, in its immediate surroundings, many attractions. There is the Old Pulteney Distillery and two interesting museums - The Wick Heritage Museum and The Nuclear and Caithness Archive - as well as a charming and rugged coastline and the beautiful Sinclairs Bay. Wick has two ruined castles, one to the south, Castle of Old Wick, and the other to the north, the majestic and inspiring Sinclair and Girnigoe Castle. In addition to the visits below, don't miss some of the remains around Wick. A mile southeast of town you'll find the Castle of Old Wick, via the A99 and March Road. A tiny sign announces this ruined 12th century keep overlooking the magnificent cliffs. Seven kilometers north, via Broadhaven Road, don't miss Castle Sinclair, whose remains are even more breathtaking.
