Nestling in the heart of the Rhymney Valley, one of the mining valleys of South Wales, the industrial town of Caerphilly, 15 km north of Cardiff, is famous for its creamy cheese! In fact, Caerphilly's big annual festival, on the last weekend in August, is called "Big Cheese". For the occasion, the castle lawns open in the evening, welcoming up to 80,000 people for falcon shows, entertainment, a funfair and a chance to sample local produce. To get there, take bus no. 26 from Cardiff Royal Hotel, 45 minutes. Or train: from Cardiff Central, 20 minutes.
