One of the strongholds of the English King Edward I. He had a "royal" village built, surrounded by ramparts, to house English merchants who, strongly encouraged by the king, wished to settle in Wales. They owed a duty to the king, and thus formed an auxiliary army to the royal regiments in the event of a Welsh attack.Today, the town (population approx. 15,000) attracts a growing number of tourists who come to visit the famous fortified castle. It's a pleasant place to stroll along its pedestrian streets. Conwy also boasts green spaces for walking along the river...A source of confusion! Don't confuse Conwy with Colwyn Bay, a seaside resort 8 km to the north-east.
