CASTLE HOTEL

Hotel €€€

This luxury hotel dates back to the 16th century. It has always been a busy place, as Conwy is on the London-Holyhead axis. The rooms are impeccable, and their grandiloquent decor matches the hotel's impressive façade. The two suites are truly royal. But what's most astonishing are the paintings that adorn the walls of the entrance, bar and restaurant. It seems that British painter John Dawson Watson paid for his stay at the hotel with paintings! You can also dine (very well) in the restaurant.

The welcome at Alan Hughes is excellent. Some rooms overlook the castle, which is illuminated at night. One day, Queen Elizabeth II came to inaugurate a tunnel that diverts some of the traffic. On this occasion, Her Royal Majesty quenched her thirst with a gin and vermouth cocktail in a glass hastily unearthed for the occasion from a local antique dealer. Our host acquired it and displayed it, taking care to screw a copper plaque commemorating the event onto it: yet another reason to visit his dining room. In summer, it's best to book in advance.

YHA CONWY

Hotel

Pleasant and spacious hostel with a view of the castle. We are rather well located, because even if we are not in the heart of Conwy, the town being quite small, we are only a quarter of an hour's walk from the castle. In the dining room, offering splendid views, good homemade meals are offered at very reasonable prices. We also appreciate the play area with a billiard table, table football... and access to a computer if needed. The rooms are simple but clean and offer the bare necessities in terms of comfort. Very good value for money.
