To get there, you have to get off at JR Marugame station, about 20 minutes by train from Takamatsu. It is a port city, the second largest in Kagawa prefecture, located west of the Seto Ohashi bridge. Marugame Castle, completed in 1660, still has its wooden keep and is worth a visit, as there are only about ten of these Edo period buildings left in Japan. The city is also an access point to the numerous Shiwaku islands, 28 in number; this historically important group of islands is located off the coast. Several of these islands are now participating in the Setouchi Triennial.
