Located halfway between Okayama and Hiroshima, the port of Onomichi had its glory days from the 12th century until the Edo period when it controlled the trade. This small harbor town is famous among artists who say that a full moon night in Onomichi is unforgettable. The steep streets, the ancient stone stairways leading to the temples and the parks overlooking the sea testify to the rich heritage of Onomichi, which was also chosen as one of the 100 places to see cherry blossoms in Japan. The city is separated from Mukai Island by a channel and its landscapes of green hills and small islands that make up this picture, served as scenery for the work Journey to Tokyo. Onomichi is also the starting point of the Shimanami-Kaido route which links several islands of the Inland Sea and whose bridges are architectural achievements. It is possible to cross them on foot or, better, by bicycle. The 70 kilometers of bicycle paths have been elected among the most beautiful in the world according to CNN News.
