The island shrine, located a few kilometers from Hiroshima, is part of the Nihon San-kei, the three most beautiful sites in Japan (Amanohashidate, Matsushima and Miyajima). It attracts crowds for its floating shrine, Itsukushima-jinja, built on stilts and isolated at high tide. With only 2000 inhabitants, Miyajima, whose original name is Itsukushima, is a haven of peace. This charming island is a delight for walkers, who can also discover the splendour of small gardens, temples and other cultural relics by walking along its small paths. As in the city of Nara, in Kansai, deer live peacefully with the city dwellers. Far from the concrete and noise, Miyajima is a must-see. Although there are many tourists during the day, the atmosphere is much calmer in the evening, once the last ferries have left. The main attraction of Miyajima is, apart from the exceptional character of the site, the near absence of cars and the omnipresence of deer. Take a walk through the narrow streets and get off the main tourist arteries.
