Naoshima is an island located on the Seto Inland Sea and has as its symbol a giant yellow pumpkin with black dots, the work of contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. The pumpkin unfortunately made the headlines in August 2021 because it was washed away by a violent typhoon. The work was rescued from the waters, but it will have to undergo a major restoration. The island is famous for its contemporary art museums, its scattered sculptures and its houses transformed into galleries. Naoshima has the look of a Mediterranean island thanks to a sunny climate most of the year, sandy beaches and roads that invite you to stroll around. Most of the artworks and museums in Naoshima belong to the Benesse Art Site Naoshima founded by Japanese businessman Soichiro Fukutake. This foundation oversees the museums (Chichu Art Museum and Lee Ufan Museum) designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and other projects such as contemporary art installations installed in abandoned traditional houses. The best way to tour Naoshima and its museums is by bus or bicycle.
